If you’ve just bought – or are about to buy – a Kia Cee’d, Kia Procee’d, Kia Ceed SW, Kia Sportage or a Hyundai ix35, this is where it was built. Kia’s mega-factory in Zilina, Slovakia turns out thousands of cars destined for the UK market.
The factory, which is barely four years old cost 1 billion euros to build. It is on track to build almost a quarter of a million vehicles this year. It takes its 2900 workers 18 hours to build each car and they pop out finished at the rate of one a minute. One in 10 workers is employed to monitor quality of the vehicles during production. A total of 410 robots fashion the cars from sheets of steel.
The building occupies a site a kilometre wide and two kilometres long. It includes a 3.5kms test track on which each car produced is tested.
Slovakia was formerly a Communist nation and Zilina was once a centre for military tank production for the Eastern Bloc. Kia is one of the largest employers in the area and also busses in workers from as far as 50kms away to satisfy demand.
